Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States and the United Nations (UN) after what he described as attacks on the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

“Caracas is currently being bombed… Venezuela is under attack,” Petro wrote on X, adding:

“The OAS and the UN must meet immediately.”

At least seven explosions rocked the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, early this morning. Thick smoke billowed over the city, and the area around a military base in the southern part of the city was without power. Low-flying aircraft were also spotted over the city.

It was initially unclear what caused the explosions.

The US has recently increased military pressure on the Venezuelan government, including an attack on a port, accusing it of complicity in drug trafficking.

Venezuela’s leadership accuses US President Donald Trump of trying to force regime change.
