A commemorative session on the occasion of the death of prominent Bosnian writer, poet and screenwriter Abdulah Sidran was held today at the National Theater in Sarajevo.

The funeral will be held after Asr prayer at 15:40 in the harem of the Gazi Husrev-bey mosque, followed by the burial.

Sidran died on Saturday after a long and serious illness at the age of 80.

Abdulah Sidran was born in 1944 in Sarajevo. He attended elementary school and high school in Zvornik and Sarajevo. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. From time to time he worked as an editor of youth newspapers and public forums and, until 1992, at Television BiH as a leading dramatist. Between these occasional jobs, he lived and worked as a professional writer. He was also a master’s candidate in chess.

He was awarded the most important literary and social awards for his poetry books. He is the winner of the Sixth of April Award of the City of Sarajevo, the Annual Award of the Writers’ Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Annual Award of the Publishing Company “Svjetlost”, the Dragon Award…

For the book of poetry “Sarajevo Taboo”, which he published during the war, he received the “Freedom Award” from the PEN Center of France.

His poetry has been translated, among others, into German, French, and Italian.

He is one of the most important screenwriters in the cinematography of the former Yugoslavia. He wrote the scripts for the films “Do you remember Dolly Bell?”, “Father on a business trip”, “Kuduz” by Ademir Kenović. As a film author, he is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions.
