The completion of the construction of the “Wings of Freedom” monument, on Golo Brdo, in the municipality of Novi Grad, on the hill Žuč, where the decisive battles for the defense of Sarajevo and BiH were fought, will be made official on Saturday, June 8 – on the Defense Day of the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo and the battle for the Žuč hill, announced the press service of this municipality.
The program on Golo Brdo starts at 2 p.m., and the central event will start at 5 p.m. The program will be broadcast live by Hayat TV. Transportation to Golo Brdo and back is provided for visitors, as well as a rich cultural and entertainment program, including a concert of patriotic songs.
The “Wings of Freedom” monument is a symbol of victory, defense and memory of the bravest sons of our homeland. It is the largest monument in Sarajevo so far, which symbolizes the courage, resistance and heroism of the heroes who defended this city from aggression.
The grandiose monument in the form of a stylized bird is part of the Žuč Memorial Complex. The span of the “Wings of Freedom” is 25 meters, and the height is 16 meters. The monument will be illuminated and visible from numerous locations in Sarajevo.
The total investment so far by the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo on the site of Golo Brda, where the “Wings of Freedom” were built, amounted to 1,330,000 BAM, of which 548,000 BAM was set aside for the purchase of approximately 80,000 square meters of land, while the construction of the “Wings of Freedom” monument cost 665,000 BAM and 120,000 BAM was spent on the project of trenches.
The project is financially supported by the Ministry of Veteran Affairs of the KS with funds in the amount of 375,000 BAM and the JU Memorial Fund of the KS in the amount of 122,000 BAM. Also, the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo financially supported the development of the conceptual design of this monument.
The conceptual design of the monument was chosen through a competition that was carried out in cooperation with three municipalities, Novi Grad, Novo Sarajevo, Vogošća and the Memorial Fund in 2016, and from the solutions offered, the solution “Wings of Freedom” by Hamdija and Emir Salihović was chosen.
In addition to the “Wings of Freedom” monument, the exterior decoration of the area around the monument is planned for which an agreement was signed between the Municipality and Canton of Sarajevo, and a museum will also be built in the future. In addition, the Municipality of Novi Grad Sarajevo is working on a project to widen the road from the “Home of the Liberators” to Golog Brdo in order to ensure easier access to this historically important site.
As a place of permanent commemoration and remembrance of heroic battles, the Municipality built the Liberators’ House on Žuč in 2018, the entrance gate to the Memorial Complex.
“We invite the families of martyrs and fallen fighters, war invalids, demobilized fighters, their families, civilian victims of the past war and all other citizens, patriots to come to Golo Brdo on Saturday to celebrate together the Day of Defense and Victory on Žuč, to remember all those who are responsible for the freedom we live in today,” it is stated in the statement.
