Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željka Cvijanović told Srna news agency that the proposal of the Chairman of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović, to the NATO alliance to invite BiH to membership was “the fruit of his personal desire, and not the agreed position of the Presidency, nor of BiH”.
When asked by Srna to comment on Bećirović’s appeal to NATO to invite Bosnia and Herzegovina for membership, Cvijanović replied that it was not the position of the BiH Presidency, but his individual position.
“I believe that it is irresponsible, unnecessary, and even risky to make such calls to NATO in a situation where you know that in BiH itself there is no consensus on membership,” Cvijanović pointed out.
She pointed out that this would not stabilize, but would further complicate the already complex political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Cvijanović believes that Bećirović’s proposal for the deployment of NATO forces in bases in BiH is equally unnecessary and inconsistent, assessing that the position of all relevant domestic and international institutions, including EUFOR, is that the security situation in BiH is stable, from which, as he states, it is quite clear that there is no need for anyone’s additional forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
