Interesting cultural events are coming to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the form of the “Day of Slovak Culture”, which will be held from September 16 to 28, 2024. This event brings a touch of Slovakia’s rich heritage to different cities across the country — and all for free to the public.
“This event is not only a celebration of Slovak culture,” said Roman Hlobeň, Slovakia’s ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. “We are bringing Slovakia to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a way that has never been seen before. It’s not just about performances and exhibitions — it’s about connecting with each other and sharing experiences. From traditional folklore to contemporary art, gastronomy and fashion, there will be something for everyone.”
One of the most memorable events will be the energetic performances of the famous Slovak folklore ensemble Magdalénka in Bijeljina (September 17), Sarajevo (September 18) and Mostar (September 19). The audience will be able to enjoy the authentic Slovak atmosphere because these traditional performances will be accompanied by tastings of Slovak delicacies and drinks.
Art lovers in Sarajevo will have the opportunity to experience “Sediments of Humanity”, a striking exhibition by Slovakian artist Denisa Olexa Bogdalíkova, which opens on September 18. Known for her innovative techniques and thought-provoking themes, Bogdalíkova also draws inspiration from the shared history of Slovakia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Collections such as “The Mysterious Stone Orb” and “Paths of the Past” reflect the intertwined cultural narratives of these two countries. The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by a tasting of Slovak cheese and the famous Tatrate liqueur, and the exhibition will be open to the public until October 11.
In cooperation with the Bosnian cultural community “Revival”, on September 20, an exhibition of facsimiles of the precious manuscript collection of Safvet-beg Bašagić will be opened. This collection, which has been kept in the University Library in Bratislava for 100 years, is part of the UNESCO program. The exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for the public to fully get to know and explore the extraordinary manuscripts from Bašagić’s collection.
Fashion lovers will not want to miss the European Fashion Passport fashion festival, organized by fashion designer Adnan Hajrulahović Haad, where top Slovak designers, including Zuzana Hakova, Jozef Grondžák (Lombardi Fashion), Miroslava Stanova and Matúš Múčka (MY tkáme), will present their latest creations.
European Fashion Passport will also, in cooperation with the Embassy of Slovakia, bring a special exhibition “Bridges of Happiness”, dedicated to Srećko Mustagrudić, a collector from Mostar who built strong cultural and artistic ties between our two countries.
Film lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy a Slovak film, with screenings planned in Bijeljina and Foča. In Sarajevo, on September 26, Cineplexx Sarajevo will screen the documentary film “Andy Warhol – American Dream”, which provides a closer look into the life of the world-famous artist of Slovak origin.
In addition to the cultural program, Slovak businessmen will participate in B2B meetings in Bosnia and Herzegovina and explore the possibilities of cooperation with local companies. Workshops aimed at encouraging creativity and cultural exchange, including those for children of the Slovak minority and young artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, will add an educational dimension to the event.
