Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi approved the opening of the Rafah border crossing for 20 trucks transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza, US President Jo Biden confirmed today.

Biden said that humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip via Egypt could be released as early as Friday.

Aid could begin after an agreement was reached with the Egyptian president and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to enable aid to the Palestinian enclave through the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

Previously, Biden said that his Egyptian counterpart El-Sisi agreed to open the Rafah border crossing to the Gaza Strip, so that 20 trucks with humanitarian aid could enter.

According to the White House, Biden and el-Sisi discussed by phone the coordination for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the mechanisms to ensure that the aid is distributed to the civilian population.

The two leaders agreed to work closely “to encourage an urgent and strong international response to the UN humanitarian appeal”.

They also agreed on the need to preserve stability in the Middle East, prevent the escalation of conflicts and create conditions for lasting peace in the region, reports Serbia today.
