Electors coming to Washington: “Real” voting for the US President Today

clinton-trumpElectors in the United States today are officially voting for president of the country, and their votes will be counted on the 6th of January 2017, after which the winner of the election will be finally declared.

Given that the American electoral system is one of the most complicated in the democratic world, electors vote require further clarification.

Each member state of the United States independently elects head of the state, and the process is the same for all 50 states. Once citizens of the state vote, the winner in this state is a candidate who won at least 50 % plus one vote.

After the counting is decided that the winner is candidate X, and candidate Y lost, then come the electors whose number varies from country to country. Electors, especially elected officials, are carriers of the will of the people of their state. If e.g. there is twenty of them, they will give their electoral vote, on the 19th of December in Washington, to the winner. In other words, citizens of some states do not elect their candidate directly but by their electors who today, in the name of the country, will vote for the winner of the election from the 8th of November.

This complicated system approves controversial election results where one candidate, such as Hillary Clinton, although he/she won the highest number of total votes, cannot be president because rival has a higher total number of elector votes.

Everything becomes even more complicated because electors theoretically do not have to support the position of the majority of citizens of their federal state. Electors may act differently and in the name of the country where the candidate X won they can choose a candidate Y.

This encouraged some activists and Hollywood actors to appeal to the electors to give their votes to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
