The American envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, and the European Union (EU) envoy, Miroslav Lajcak, expressed concern about the situation in the north of Kosovo in an interview with Europa Center.
Escobar said he was very concerned about the situation, saying it could turn into a regional conflict.
“I am very worried, there is a possibility that it could turn into a regional conflict,” Escobar said.
Meanwhile, Lajcak also said that the situation is critical in the north of Kosovo.
“The situation is critical and we need to discuss the next steps. The situation is very tense and I am worried, I cannot hide it. We want people to leave the streets, to return to dialogue and to have new elections in which Serbs will participate without any conditioning,” Lajcak noted.
Asked about the kidnapping of three Kosovo policemen, Escobar said that even if they were kidnapped or entered the territory of Serbia by mistake, they should be released immediately. Lajcak also supported this position.
Lajcak said that there are people in the north who are armed and ready to kill. According to him, this should be put to an end, and he added that everyone should live together, and not bring criminals to the north.
He added that it should be worked with those who want to have a normal life.
Both of them again mention three demands for the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti: calming the situation in the north, holding new elections in four municipalities in the north, which are mostly populated by Serbs, and returning to the dialogue for the normalization of relations, in which the EU mediates here, Klix.ba reports.
