Clubs around the world in men’s football spent a record 2.35 billion dollars (approximately 2.265 billion euros) in the January 2025 transfer window, which is nearly 58 percent more than last year, FIFA announced yesterday.
FIFA highlighted that the amount spent is as much as 47.1 percent higher than the previous record set in January 2023, when a total of 1.57 billion dollars (approximately 1.515 billion euros) was spent in the winter transfer window.
Another record was broken on the international stage in this year’s winter transfer window – the total number of completed transfers, which, according to FIFA’s data, amounted to 5.863. This represents an increase of 19.1 percent compared to last year’s record for the highest number of players changing clubs in a January transfer window.
As usual, English clubs were the biggest spenders this January as well, paying 621.6 million dollars (approximately 599 millioneuros) for new player acquisitions. Manchester City, the reigning English champion, alone spent 224 million dollars (approximately 216 million euros).
However, the most expensive footballer this January was Colombian Jhon Duran, who transferred from English club Aston Villa to Saudi club Al-Nassr for 80 million dollars (approximately 77 million euros).
In women’s football, a record spending amount was also recorded in this year’s January transfer window, with 5.8 million dollars(approximately 5.6 million euros) spent, representing an incredible 180.6 percent increase compared to last year’s January transfer window.
English clubs also led in women’s football, spending 2.3 milliondollars (approximately 2.2 million euros) on players.
