stefanfuleEuropean Commissioner for Enlargement Policy, Štefan Füle will present today in Brussels the new Enlargement Strategy and annual reports on the progress of countries involved into the process of the European Union accession.

Following the adoption at the European Commission, the Commissioner Füle will speak in front of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament. The speech is scheduled for 12:30.

In terms of the publication of the so-called Enlargement Package, the Commissioner Füle said that this year four topics are important. The first one is Croatia, which became the 28th member state. Also the power of transformation of countries entering the EU, and that is why we have got the Nobel Peace Prize. Secondly, the fact that the expansion continued despite the financial crisis, and not because it is carried out automatically but because it is a credible policy. The third topic is the new motto of this year’s progress report “Basics in the first place”. What are the basics? The rule of law, fight against corruption, economic issues and competitiveness. We want the candidate countries which join the EU to be prepared in the economic sense as well. And the last topics, which was highlighted last year as well, the European Commission remains the best friend and continues to provide support to candidate countries and potential candidates in their very important path to full membership in the European Union, said Füle.
