As a part of its support to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the area of the Rule of Law in securing the efficiency, professionalism and independence of the justice sector, the European Union finances a new project to improve the capacities for the execution of criminal sanctions worth €7,5 million.

The project will provide improvements in the justice sector through providing adequate infrastructure for custodial institutions and will be implemented at 3 locations in the country.

A new pavilion will be built in Zenica Prison complex aiming at improving the existing overcrowded structures which hamper its effective management. The new pavilion will ensure proper accommodation and better supervision of inmates.

The second facility will be located in Orasje, where there is an educational building and sports hall for the existing juvenile correctional facility that will greatly contribute to rehabilitation and educational activities of this institution.

The third facility will be located in Bijeljina where a high security level prison complex will be constructed. The construction of the prison is in line with the European standards respecting human rights and modern spatial and living conditions, and will ensure adequate facilities for detainees which is a prerequisite for the rule of law in the country.

The construction works at 3 locations started in the period July-August 2019 and are to be completed in the coming 12 months.
