exhibition11Within the project “Phoenix – Culture for the future” three exhibitions are now open in the Brusa bezistan: “Baltan yataghans”, “Menus from the collection of Stjepan Meze” and “Traditional handcraft tools”. Exhibitions are taking you back to the old times and showing the development of B&H from the ancient times to the Ottoman period.

Exhibition “Balkan yataghans” by Adnan Muftarevic is aiming to present the weapons that craftsmen from all over the Balkans were making back then. The exhibition by Zanka Dodig “Menus of Stjepan Meze” is presenting the food culture in the hotels in Sarajevo. These are collector menus, the old cook books and collections of many art objects and paintings. The director of the Museum of Sarajevo Muamer Sehovic presented the “Traditional handcraft tools” as an important segment of the material and cultural heritage as well as the very important testimony about people that were living in this area.

“Exhibitions are connected with this place, this city, crafts and tools that were essential for making objects that you can see in the permanent and periodic exhibitions. The city of Sarajevo was getting stronger over time and the 16th and 17th century was the golden age of the craft guilds. Back then, there was 80 crafts that were grouped into guilds at Bascarsija, and every street is named after one of these crafts. According to the old researches that were conducted earlier, there are 70 crafts in total (35 traditional, 2 artistic and 33 from the field of food). It is very important to note that it is needed to work on the promotion, protection and development of craft business in Sarajevo and B&H,” said Sehovic.

The project “Phoenix – Culture for the future” is financed by the European Union within the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, which is sending messages of peace and tolerance from Sarajevo.
