A Ryanair plane lands at Banja Luka International Airport on Tuesday, marking the first flight between the city of Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Stockholm in Sweden, local media reported Tuesday.

At the solemn ceremony held at the airport located some 235 kilometers northwest of the capital Sarajevo, President of Republika Srpska, one of the entities in BiH, Zeljka Cvijanovic pointed out that the development of Banja Luka International Airport “brought enormous opportunities for improving and strengthening the local economy, tourism and passenger traffic”.

Cvijanovic emphasized that a great number of people who used to travel from other airports in the region, will use the airport in Banja Luka from now on.

Airport’s director Dusko Kovacevic highlighted that from now, citizens can travel to European cities cheaply. He emphasized that he expects more than 100,000 passengers in 2019.

The flight between Banja Luka International Airport and Stockholm Skavsta Airport will take place two times a week, on Tuesday and Saturday. The service is a morning one, departing at 10:35 a.m. from Banja Luka and arriving in Stockholm at 13:05 a.m. (both local time). The returning leg, meanwhile, departs Stockholm at 07:40 a.m. and arrives in Banja Luka at 10:10 a.m.

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair stated in April this year that it would operate its first flights from Banja Luka International Airport to cities of Brussels and Germany’s Memmingen as of November 2018. Europe’s leading low-cost airline will connect Belgium’s Brussels South Charleroi Airport, and Germany’s Allgau Airport Memmingen with Banja Luka International Airport twice a week, as part of its Winter 2018 schedule.
