Irish police said five people, including three children, were taken to hospital after a serious incident in central Dublin on Thursday.

Local media reported that people were stabbed in Parnell Square in Dublin, reports Reuters.

The police stated in a statement that the investigation is ongoing, reports RSE.

The BBC stated that the incident happened around 1:40 p.m. local time, and that a man, a woman and three minor children were killed.

One of the children, a girl and a woman, are in hospital in serious condition. And the rest of the victims are being treated for minor injuries.

The area has been cordoned off and declared a crime scene.

The Irish Times reported that the main suspect had been taken into custody and was suffering from self-inflicted wounds.

The first indications are that the man tried to attack several young people and that passers-by intervened.

The motive of the attack, which happened in front of the school on the street, has not been determined, reports Reuters.

Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee said she was “deeply shocked by the horrific attack” and added that she was with those injured, especially children, their parents and families.
