Taste Atlas published a list of the best pastries in the world according to readers’ ratings, and flatbread (somun) was also included in it.
The first place was taken by roti canai, which is eaten in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Behind it, there was Indian naan with garlic and Persian bread nan-e barbari…
Bosnian flatbread is in 15th place, and it is interesting that focaccia (17th place), jufka (19th place), lepinja (25th place), tortilla (37th place), etc. were behind it.
“Flatbread is made from flour, water, salt and yeast. After the dough is prepared, it is traditionally baked in a bread oven, but today it is mostly prepared in stoves. There are many varieties of flatbread. For example, some prepare it with sesame, while others add oil to the dough”, it was stated in the description, among other thigs.
Legend has it that this special type of bread was created when Ottoman soldiers were present in the Balkans. They needed a pastry that could be made quickly and filled with different ingredients.
Nowadays, it is most often eaten with cevapi. Of course, it also goes well with other types of meat. It is important to note that the residents of our country emphasize the difference between a flatbread and lepinja. Flatbread is thinner, i.e. softer and definitely tastier. It goes without saying that they like to eat it in the region, especially in Serbia and Croatia, Klix.ba reports.
