Fr. Mario Divkovic: The Meaning of Christmas is not in rich Feasts and Ornaments

Christmas is a holiday that makes everyone happy, and unity is especially felt in moments when members of other religions come to congratulate this important holiday.

Along with the Christmas celebration, numerous other customs appeared over time including Christmas trees, Christmas songs, and gifts.

The Guardian of the Franciscan Monastery of St. Apostle Peter and Paul in Tuzla, Fr. Mario Divkovic, believes that this great holiday is losing its original meaning, considering the fact that believers became blinded by external things, mostly Christmas songs and lights.

“We are forgetting that the message of Christmas is that God comes to this world and wants to be close to people. If we understand this in that way and observe the meaning of Christmas and the closeness of God, then we will not be blinded with the things from outside,” stated Fr. Divkovic.

“We all say that we are celebrating Christmas, but this celebration refers to a rich feast, a visit to friends and family… We believe that the real celebration is that, but it should be much deeper, we should think about the meaning of Christmas in our solitude, to think about God and his arrival on this world, but also the meaning of what God did to come to this world,” stated Divkovic.

God comes to this world, according to him, to save every man, and Christians should pass God’s message of love, kindness and care on other people.

“Let’s show our closeness and love to the other man through our acts, and love and God’s closeness will be demonstrated in those acts,” concluded Divkovic.

“It is not easy to change in today’s world. Every change requires a great effort, but we will have to start changing once. I always emphasize that we should not allow our change to happen too late, but to recognize our shortcomings and failures and start correcting them today, and not leave them for some other time,” said Divkovic.

At the end, Divkovic sent a message to all peoples of BiH not to allow the fear and trembling to take over their hearts, but to let love and hope to be born.
