Billionaire Elon Musk withdrew his threat to decommission the “Dragon” spacecraft just a few hours after announcing the removal of the craft that transports astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). This dramatic reversal happened amid an escalating public conflict between Musk and the United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump.
Escalation of the conflict on social media
The disagreement began on Tuesday (June 3rd) when Musk criticized the administration’s proposed tax and spending bill on his social network X. “This massive, outrageous, pork-fillled Congressional spending bill, is an abomination,” Musk wrote.
The situation became even more dramatic when Trump threatened to cut off government contracts awarded to Musk’s rocket company SpaceX and his Starlink internet satellite services.
Controversial accusations regarding Epstein’s documents
The conflict reached its peak when Musk, without any evidence, stated that Trump is “in the Epstein documents,” and that this is the “real reason” why more records about the disgraced financier and pedophile have not been publicly released. This accusation refers to secret documents linked to the late Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019.
Trump’s administration denied this claim and called Musk’s criticism unfounded.
Threat to remove the Dragon spacecraft
In response to Trump’s threats, Musk said on Thursday that his company SpaceX would begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft “immediately” due to President Donald Trump’s threats to cancel government contracts with Musk’s business.
The Dragon spacecraft is key to NASA’s missions as it transports astronauts and cargo to the ISS. Removing this spacecraft could seriously endanger the U.S. space program and ISS missions.
However, a few hours later, Musk said, “Okay, we won’t decommission Dragon,” after an X user urged him and Trump to “calm down and take a step back for a few days.”
With this move, Elon Musk could have endangered billions of dollars in contracts and seriously jeopardized U.S. space activities.
SpaceX currently holds contracts worth over 22 billion dollars with the U.S. government, including vital missions for NASA, the Department of Defense, and other government agencies.
Attempts at reconciliation
Several allies caught in the middle of the implosion between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have subtly tried to mediate peace between the two at a moment when their quiet conversations were interrupted by a post on X.
This public conflict marks the end of an alliance between the president and the billionaire that lasted much longer than many had expected.
Consequences for NASA and space missions
The Dragon spacecraft became a key part of U.S. space infrastructure after NASA ended the Space Shuttle program. SpaceX is the only U.S. provider of astronaut transport to the ISS, making any threat to this program particularly concerning.
Experts warn that a prolonged conflict between Musk and Trump could have far-reaching consequences for the future of the U.S. space program and the country’s position in the space race.
Although Musk withdrew his threat, this incident shows how fragile the relationships are between key figures in U.S. politics and technology. The conflict also highlighted the importance of SpaceX for the U.S. space program and the potential risks when political disputes interfere with strategic national interests.
