Gabriel Attal elected new Prime Minister of France

Gabriel Attal was appointed today as the new Prime Minister of France, the French presidency announced.

Attal (34) was the Minister of Education, and he is the youngest person in that position and the first French head of government who is openly gay.

His predecessor, Elizabeth Bourne, resigned yesterday amid political tensions over the highly unpopular pension reform she initiated and the controversial immigration bill.

With that law, the government gets greater powers in deporting foreigners.

French President Emmanuel Macron (46), whose mandate expires in 2027, is struggling to appease pressure from the extreme right, and in the coming days he will appoint a government, based on the proposal of the new prime minister.

In France, the prime minister, the second most powerful position after the president, is elected by the head of state.

After the appointment, the prime minister proposes the minister to the president.
