An official academy on the occasion of the 481st anniversary of the existence and continuous educational work of Gazi Husrev-bey Medresa was held in Sarajevo.

Mensur Malkic, the Director of Gazi Husrev-bey Medresa, talked about the continuity, engagement and work of this institution, as well as its great importance in the education system of BiH.

He also stated that Gazi Husrev-bey’s Medresa has educated Bosniaks throughout its almost five hundred years long tradition, and that today, unlike before, it is not exclusively a religious school anymore.

The ceremony was attended by officials of religious, cultural, political and public life of BiH. Besides the academy, a solemn session of the Council of Teachers was held on this occasion as well.

Medresa was established on January 8, 1537. It was established by Gazi Husrev-bey. The building of Gazi Husrev-bey Medresa was designed as a polyvalent and representative object and its central place was given to the space intended for teaching (dershana), and a series of rooms of residential character. According to the decision of the founder of this school, it is located in the very heart of the Old Town Sarajevo.

Gazi Husrev-bey Medresa is the only school in BiH that has been continuously working for more than 470 years. Until today, this school has educated numerous prominent persons who had a significant role in the survival and development of BiH.
