TBILISI, April 12 (Xinhua) — Georgia will invest as much as 10 billion U.S. dollars to upgrade its infrastructure in 2017-2020, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said Wednesday.
After presenting to the parliament an action plan for the country’s infrastructure development, Kvirikashvili told reporters that the government has planned to implement about 2,500 infrastructure projects in the next four years.
“These projects will involve the construction and reconstruction of about 1,000 km of roads as well as the modernization of the water supply system for 500,000 people,” he said, stressing that upon the completion of those projects, some important livelihood issues will be resolved.
“We are carrying out an unprecedented amount of investment for these 2,500 projects. About 10 billion dollars will be spent on infrastructure projects in 2017-2020,” he added.
Georgia, located at the junction part of Central Asia and Eastern Europe, has been committed to becoming a transportation hub for Asia and Europe in recent years.
Currently, many railway and highway projects are under construction with the financial aid of international organizations.
