Greece is on alert because extreme weather has caused fires and is expected to bring storms, Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias said today.

“The risk assessment committee, in an emergency meeting this morning, informed us of dangerous weather phenomena with strong storms and intense electrical activity tomorrow in many parts of the country,” Vasilis Kikilias said, according to state news agency AMNA.

The National Meteorological Service announced that unstable air masses coming to Greece from the northwestern Balkans will bring heavy rains and thunderstorms, especially to the central and northern areas of the country.

Extreme weather, accompanied by thunder and hail, will reach the northern regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace later today, and will be particularly severe in Halkidiki tomorrow morning, before spreading to the southern and central regions of Thessaly, the Sporades Islands and central Greece.

The Ministry of Civil Protection stated that there is a very high risk of fire in the regions of Chania in Crete, Laconia in the Peloponnese and the island of Kythira.

Meanwhile, a forest fire broke out today in the Athens suburb of Glyka Nera.

The fire service announced that the fire broke out in the afternoon and that it moved from the houses to the nearby forest, AA writes.
