More than 47 Million Square Meters in the Tuzla Canton are still at Risk of Mines

The Government of Tuzla Canton accepted the information on the achieved results of demining and destruction of unexploded ordnance in 2025, from which it follows that the teams achieved extremely good operational results, but that the future of mine action is seriously threatened due to the decline in donor interest.

According to official data, during 2025, a total of 6,270,364 square meters were demined in Tuzla Canton, which represents the second best annual result since the beginning of humanitarian demining in this canton.

From the beginning of demining operations until the end of 2025, a total of 52,823,263 square meters of terrain were cleared. Even so, the problem of mines and unexploded ordnance is far from solved.
An area of more than 47 million square meters, which is about two percent of the total area of the canton, is still considered suspicious in the area of the Tuzla Canton.

The Information adopted by the Government of TC specifically warns about the worrying trend of decreasing international support.

“Based on the achieved results, it can be concluded that the interest of donors in investing in demining in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to decrease, which warns that the Mine Action Strategy in BiH for the period 2018-2027 will be difficult to achieve,” states the announcement of the Government of TC.

Particularly alarming information refers to the amount of found and destroyed explosive devices. Namely, during the year 2025, more than 4,800 pieces of mine-explosive and unexploded ordnance were destroyed, which clearly shows that the danger is still not in the past.

“The ubiquitous occurrence of their daily reporting indicates that there are still a large number of these assets in the field,” the information points out.
The Government of TC emphasizes that thanks to the quick reaction and coordination of the competent services, a large number of potential accidents were prevented.

“Thanks to the work of the Tuzla Civil Protection team and members of the KDZ team of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Tuzla Canton, these assets were taken over, transported and destroyed on time and safely,” the adopted document states.
Although statistical data indicate significant progress, the Government of TC says that without stable and long-term financing, the process of demining may come into question.

This, they warn, would have direct consequences for the safety of citizens, but also for the development of local communities, infrastructure and agriculture, Klix.ba writes.
