Democrats in the US Congress will meet behind closed doors today amid growing concerns about their chances in the November 5 presidential election, which incumbent Joe Biden does not want to drop out of despite calls from some of his colleagues to do so.
–Increasing discord in the party–
While only a handful of House Democrats have publicly called on the 81-year-old president to step down and allow someone else to take on Republican Donald Trump, several more have expressed concern after a televised debate in which Biden performed poorly, fueling debate about his readiness to defeat his rival and lead the country for another four and a half years.
The growing rift within the party has forced the Biden campaign to try to prevent further demonstrations of resistance. The president said in a phone call to MSNBC on Monday that he is “not going anywhere,” and he told donors the same thing later in the day.
On Sunday, Biden toured several locations in the state of Pennsylvania, one of those where victory is considered key to a final triumph. Vice President Kamala Harris, considered the most likely successor to Biden if he does step down, is also campaigning, CNN writes.
-“They will need additional evidence”–
Democratic Rep. Joe Morelle said voters in New York County told him they were losing confidence in Biden after the June 27 debate.
“They will need further evidence to have more confidence in him to do the job. You can’t just tell them that, he has to show it,” said Morelle, who suggests more conversations between the president and the voters. Even experienced lawmakers, supporters of Biden, believe that he should do more.
