More than 80 percent of the residents of Gaza were forced to leave their homes due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.

“In addition to the many killed and wounded civilians that I mentioned, 80 percent of the people of Gaza have been forced out of their homes,” Guterres said at a UN Security Council meeting on the Palestinians.

He added that there is an increasing number of people who have been expelled to the southern part of Gaza, but that nowhere in the enclave is safe.

On October 7, the Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale surprise attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing around 1,200 people and abducting hundreds more in neighboring Israeli communities. Israel retaliated with rocket strikes on the Gaza Strip and a blockade of food, water and fuel supplies, followed by a ground invasion on October 27.

So far, about 1,200 people in Israel and more than 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in the clashes, including 6,150 children and 4,000 women in the Gaza Strip.

Conflicts are also taking place in Lebanon and the West Bank.

Last week, Qatar brokered an agreement between Israel and Hamas on a four-day truce and the exchange of a portion of prisoners and hostages, as well as the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Yesterday, the parties agreed to extend the truce by two days, Srna reports.
