The International Criminal Courts Mechanism reached a decision that the appeal procedure of Radovan Karadžić is exceptionally complex, which is why he should be paid another 430.000 BAM for the costs, according to the regulations of The Hague Tribunal.
This funds refer only to the second stage of the procedure, i.e. the appeal. According to the rules, 80 percent of the total amount will be paid in monthly installments, while the remaining 20 percent will be paid after the completion of the second stage.
The appeal procedure before The Hague Tribunal consists of three stages – announcement, appeal and hearing, for which specific amounts of reimbursements for defense are determined, depending on the complexity of the case.
For the first stage, i.e. the announcement of the appeal, The Hague Tribunal already approved 230.000 BAM to the defense.
Foreseen reimbursement for the hearing of the appeal, the third stage of the procedure, is 55.000 BAM, which means that Karadžić’s defense should cost at least 700.000 BAM in total.
A first instance verdict found Karadžić guilty of the genocide in Srebrenica, terrorizing the citizens of Sarajevo, persecution of Bosniaks and Croats and taking members of UNPROFOR as hostages. He was sentenced to 40 years.
