Yesterday’s protest in Sarajevo on the occasion of the tragic tram accident in which 23-year-old student Erdoan Morankić lost his life, and 17-year-old student Ella Jovanović was seriously injured, ended in front of the BiH National Museum, where it started, with a message from the participants that they continue to demand justice and an announcement for a new gathering today at 12:00 noon.
Behind the protests were several informal groups of students and pupils, who published their demands on social networks.
They listed four key demands, which include complete transparency of the investigation, withdrawal of unsafe vehicles, systemic responsibility and a long-term solution, i.e. building a quality and safe public transport system.
This was the fourth day of the protest, where at 12:00 today in front of the National Museum of BiH, at the beginning of the protest, mostly young people, high school students and students, initially gathered, while a large number of citizens in Sarajevo joined them during the day.
After the gathering, the participants of the protest walked peacefully to the General Hospital where the seriously injured Ella Jovanović is located, and after that they went to the Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor’s Office, where students and high school students read their previously mentioned demands in front of the building of this institution.
Then they continued their protest walk to the starting point of gathering in front of the BiH National Museum, where today’s protests ended.
Even today, those gathered carried numerous banners with messages of support for the seriously injured Ella, but also messages to representatives of the authorities, calling them to account, as well as messages of support for the tram driver Adnan Kasapović.
After yesterday’s resignation of Sarajevo Canton Prime Minister Nihad Uk, GRAS director Senad Mujagić also resigned today.
The participants of today’s meeting pointed out that the resignation of Prime Minister Nihad Uk and the fall of the Sarajevo Canton Government will not stop their struggle. They emphasized that they demand the determination of responsibility at all levels, from the Sarajevo Canton Government and the competent ministry to the GRAS company.
Today’s protests were joined by Muriz Memić, the father of the victim Dženan Memić, in order to offer his support to the gathered young people.
Traffic was suspended in both directions on the route between the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Marijin Dvor, due to the gathering of citizens in front of that museum.
In recent days in Sarajevo, citizens gathered at protests where they called everyone in the chain of the system to account and called on the KS Prosecutor’s Office and the Cantonal Court to react professionally and efficiently.
The tragic accident on February 12th occurred when the tram, which was moving from the direction of the Railway Station, entered the intersection near the Technical School at high speed, as a result of which it derailed, hitting the tram station and pedestrians. On that occasion, one person was killed and four people were injured.
Yesterday, the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo rejected the request of the Prosecutor’s Office of Sarajevo Canton to order the detention of tram driver Adnan Kasapović, who declared that he was not guilty and that the cause of the accident was a technical malfunction of the tram.
