According to the annual Post Office Travel Money list, Sarajevo is ranked first among the most affordable city break destinations in Europe for 2026.
The research looked at 50 popular and emerging European destinations and its calculations are based on the total cost of a weekend trip.

The analysis includes: two nights in a three-star hotel, a three-course dinner for two with wine, coffee, beer, and Coca-Cola, round-trip airport transfers, a panoramic bus tour, a 48-hour local public transport ticket, and tickets to one tourist attraction, a gallery, and a museum.
According to this data, a weekend in Sarajevo costs 286 euros, which makes it three times cheaper than Oslo, which is the most expensive city on the list, where the same vacation costs 846 euros. Other expensive city break destinations include Copenhagen, with an average of 773 euros, and Edinburgh, at 771 euros.

Time Out points out that Sarajevo is a great choice for a weekend getaway because its sights can be easily explored on foot. The sights that can be easily explored on foot are museums such as the National Museum and the Museum of War Childhood, including Sarajevo’s rich religious and cultural heritage. It is also highlighted that traditional meals are affordable options for visitors, with a burek at the Markale city market where it is sold for less than five euros.

It is also noted that August is an excellent month to visit the city due to the Sarajevo Film Festival, taking place this year from August 14 to August 21. On the list of the ten cheapest European cities for a short getaway, Sarajevo is followed by the following cities Bucharest, Tirana, Belgrade, Trenčín, Riga, Lille, Vilnius, Strasbourg, and Podgorica.
