Hungarian FM: Hungary will veto if the EU tries to impose Sanctions on Milorad Dodik

Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, stated that Hungary would veto a possible proposal to impose sanctions on a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Milorad Dodik.

As Szijjarto wrote on his official Facebook profile, the new German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock recently threatened sanctions against Milorad Dodik.

“We are concerned about such statements because BiH is close to us, preserving stability and peace in the country is our basic security interest. Berlin is further, but not so far that you could never fly to Banja Luka from there. Fly and negotiate. Talk to Serbs. With them, not about them. Maybe this will help you understand the situation,” Szijarto wrote.

Furthermore, he added that the European Union (EU) can impose sanctions against anyone only by a unanimous decision of all member states.

“And just to be clear, Hungary will not give its support to any sanctions against the leader of the Serbs in BiH, Milorad Dodik. If there is such a proposal, we will veto it. Talk, not sanctions, that is what the EU’s policy for the Western Balkans should be about in the future,” the Hungarian minister pointed out.

To recall, last week, the new German government called on the EU to impose sanctions on Milorad Dodik over his secessionist policies and decision to withdraw from the state level.

Clear and unambiguous views on sanctions for Milorad Dodik, associates who participate in unconstitutional actions and related companies are supported by the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and some other EU countries.

The sanctions are also supported by the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (U.S.), Canada, and other countries.
