Indonesia Marks 80th Independence Anniversary in Sarajevo with Ceremonies Strengthening Ties with BiH

Marking the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s Declaration of Independence, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Sarajevo organized a series of official events. The commemoration was not only an occasion for national reflection, but also an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral and people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

The program brought together members of the Indonesian diaspora, students, migrant workers, and friends of Indonesia in BiH, highlighting the community’s role in fostering closer relations between the two nations.

Festivities began on August 3, 2025, with a cultural competition featuring traditional Indonesian games such as sack races and tug-of-war, along with children’s coloring activities. The main flag-raising ceremony, held on August 17, 2025, welcomed former BiH ambassadors who had previously served in Indonesia. As a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to bilateral relations, the Indonesian Ambassador presented them with symbolic pieces of tumpeng (a cone-shaped rice dish).

“This celebration is more than just honoring independence—it is also a chance to deepen the friendship between Indonesia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The spirit of unity and cooperation reflected here represents values shared by both nations,” said the Indonesian Ambassador.

The Indonesian diaspora in BiH continues to expand, playing an active role in strengthening cultural, economic, and social ties. The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance people-to-people connections and broaden cooperation across various sectors.
