Zehrudin Osmanovic, professor on the Faculty of Technology in Tuzla was honored with two golden medals on presentations of innovators in Zagreb and Krakow for his invention that is converting chemical waste into cement.
Professor Osmanovic, who lives in Lukavac, is following the Google Earth’s photos of the city from 2010, on which you can see the increase of the so-called “White Sea,” which is actually landfill site of Fabrika Sode.
“According to current footage, ‘White Sea’, which is precipitating from 1892, is covering an area of one-quarter of Lukavac. In cooperation with the management of the factory, which is investing a lot in environmental protection, I took samples of sediment, and since I am dealing with cement since 1994, I was trying to establish whether the substance can be used in the production of cement. Analysis have shown that the composition of the material is very similar, but is full of moisture, which is unacceptable for making cement, since it required dry substances like limestone,” said Prof. Osmanovic, adding that he had the support of colleagues from the faculty and his students during the research.
According to professor Osmanovic, it has been proven that the process of taking this waste and after adjustments for the cement industry, it can be applied in the production of cement as well as the environmental protection.
If the area of the “White Sea” would be cleaned and materials used for the production, we would be able to make a park at that location.
“If it would be cleaned up, it could be filled with the new soil and we would get a usable area that could be arranged in the park,” concluded Osmanovic.
