Tehran has agreed to a United Nations request for the safe passage of humanitarian ships through the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media reported on Friday.

“Iran has agreed to a UN request for the safe passage of ships carrying humanitarian aid through the Strait of Hormuz,” the Times of Tehran reported on the social media platform X, citing Iran’s ambassador to Geneva.

Tensions in the region have escalated since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran, killing more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with a series of drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf states hosting US military facilities, causing casualties and material damage, while global markets and aviation were affected.

Iran has also effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz to most ships, a key oil shipping route that normally carries about 20 million barrels per day and approximately 20% of global liquefied natural gas trade.
