The military said it had completed an initial investigation into the killing of an American woman in the West Bank on Friday and found that she was likely mistakenly shot by a soldier.
The investigation, reportedly conducted by commanders, reportedly found that Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, was “highly likely” killed as a result of “indirect and inadvertent IDF fire, which was aimed at the main instigator” during the alleged riots.
“The incident occurred during a violent gathering of dozens of Palestinian suspects, who were burning tires and throwing stones at forces at the Beita intersection,” the IDF claimed.
Eygi, an American of Turkish origin, was an activist of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).
A military police investigation was launched into the fatal incident, the findings of which will be submitted to the Chief Military Prosecutor for review. The IDF says Israeli officials have submitted a request to perform an autopsy.
“The IDF expresses its deep regret for the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi,” the Israeli military added.
Eygi is the third ISM activist to be killed since 2000. She was the 18th demonstrator killed in Beita since 2020, ISM said.
