The Israeli military said on Monday it had killed Hassan Farhat, the commander of Hamas’s western sector, in an airstrike on the southern Lebanese city of Sidon.
Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said the strike took place on Thursday night and that Farhat was targeted, who was accused of “orchestrating several attacks against Israeli forces.”
Farhat is allegedly responsible for launching rocket attacks on the Israeli city of Safed on February 14, 2024, which killed one soldier and wounded several others.
The Lebanese news agency reported that three people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on an apartment in Sidon, without giving further details.
A fragile ceasefire has been in place in Lebanon since November, ending months of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanese authorities have reported more than 1,364 Israeli ceasefire violations, including at least 117 deaths and more than 363 injuries.
According to the ceasefire agreement, Israel was supposed to withdraw completely from southern Lebanon by January 26, but the deadline was extended to February 18. It still maintains a military presence at five border posts, AA writes.
