Italy will restart its financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), which it previously suspended, reports Anadolu.
Palestinian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Mustafa met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani in the capital Rome.
“Prime Minister Meloni reiterated Italy’s support for all ongoing efforts to achieve a sustainable ceasefire, release all hostages held by Hamas and increase the quality of humanitarian aid to the citizens of Gaza,” the Italian Government said in a statement.
Minister Tajani also said in a statement to Italian media that his country will continue to support the Palestinian people.
“I informed Mustafa that the government has allocated new funds in addition to those already paid for the Palestinian people, totaling 35 million euros. Five million will be sent to UNRWA,” Tajani said.
Italy was among the countries that suspended financial aid to the agency in January, following allegations by Israeli officials that UNRWA staff “had links with terrorist organizations and were involved in the attacks on October 7, 2023.”, AA writes.
