On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the official signing of the Dayton Agreement, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos issued a statement saying that the agreement “closed one of the darkest chapters in Europe and secured a peace that has lasted to this day.”

They noted in a joint statement that, 30 years later, there are still unresolved challenges from the past for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“While this year has presented political obstacles, the country has remained resilient. Staying on course towards EU membership as a united, sovereign country in a stable and secure region must remain the ultimate goal,” Kallas and Kos wrote.

They stressed that all political leaders should focus on the necessary reforms to move forward.

They indicated that the EU is ready to ensure peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina and stressed that the EU military operation EUFOR Althea remains indispensable to this end.

“Thirty years after Dayton, Bosnia and Herzegovina must seize the opportunity to shape its future in the EU,” they wrote.

The Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was formally signed on 14 December in Paris, after being negotiated and signed on 21 November 1995 at the Wright-Patterson Joint Base in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
