”The United Nations (UN) stands ready to help address the problems caused by the current political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), to avoid any incident, ” stated Miroslav Jenca, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the United States (U.S.) in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Multinational Operations.

Jenca met with the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Zeljko Komsic, with whom he discussed the current political situation in BiH, and among other things, the current blockades present in BiH institutions due to the amendment of the BiH Criminal Code by former High Representative (HR), Valentin Inzko, which considers genocide denial and glorification of war criminals as a crime.

Komsic stressed that the current situation in the country is the biggest crisis since the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed in 1995, and that, according to him, the rhetoric present by certain political actors is reminiscent of the beginning of the 1990s. He emphasized that it is necessary to make all efforts in order for the constitutional and legal system in BiH to be functional, through a legalistic approach towards the competent institutions, from which a timely and adequate reaction is expected. It was especially pointed out that any conflict should be avoided by a legal approach.

Jenca pointed out that their goal is primarily to provide prosperity, peace, and security to all citizens in BiH and the region.

It was said at the meeting that the direction of action should be directed towards European integration, ie towards fulfilling 14 key priorities from the Opinion of the European Commissionand that the focus of action of all political actors in BiH should be directed towards that.

The need to implement all five judgments of the European Court of Human Rights was especially emphasized, which can only result in quality constitutional reforms and amendments to the BiH Election Law, which will enable respect for basic human rights, without discrimination and segregation.

Zeljko Komsic, the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH expressed his gratitude to Miroslav Jenca, Assistant Secretary-General of the UN in the Department of Political Affairs, for theUN’s support to BiH in preserving and promoting lasting peace, security, and stable democratic and inclusive development and contribution to international peace and security.
