Kurz: We must not lose the Western Balkans

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz advocates joining of the Western Balkans countries to the EU, and he warned that otherwise this region might be under the influence of others.

“It is true that there is a prospect of the accession to the EU or a stronger influence of Russia, Turkey and other parts of the world. To lose that region, which is so close to us, would be bad for the Western Balkans, as well as for us in the EU,” stated Kurz on European forum Alpbach.

Kurz, who is currently chairing the EU Council, noted that Austria is the country that supports the Western Balkans in the EU the most.

He denied that he talked about the Western Balkans as a crisis region, and noted that he is advocating for this region to enter the EU.

Kurz also added that he feels that Belgrade and Pristina are noticeably getting closer with their opinions and that this situation should be used to find solutions.
