A large number of citizens gathered yesterday on the City Square in Bihac to express dissatisfaction with the health system of the Una-Sana Canton (USC), but also the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The reason was the recent tragic death of 25-year-old Azra Becirspahic and her baby, who died during childbirth in the Bihac hospital.

Several hundred citizens called on the authorities to urgently find out the cause of death of the young pregnant woman and her newborn baby in the Cantonal Hospital “Irfan Ljubijankic“. More humane conditions of childbirth were requested, as well as the maximum care of doctors and medical workers for the mother and her child.

According to local television, an informal group of citizens from Bosanski Petrovac, who were also the organizers of this protest, stressed that the main goal is to never have such a tragedy again.

The gathered provided support to all mothers to publicly share their experiences during their stay in the hospital and to emphasize the importance of adopting the initiative as soon as possible, which has already been sent to the competent institutions, in order to accompany every mother in all health institutions in USC.

Protesters carried banners “Safe childbirth is a political issue”, “We are all Azra”, “Bribe is necessary during a childbirth”, “Maternity hospital should not be a synonym for fear”, “Baby is not the same as an envelope”, and gathered read shocking letters from mothers from all over BiH and called on all health institutions in the country to provide the best possible treatment to every pregnant woman.

The investigation into the death of the mother is being conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of the Interior of the USC. Azra Becirspahic and her baby passed away on March 17th, but the cause of death is still unknown.
