Large Protests of the Opposition in Belgrade, Numerous injured in the Conflict between Demonstrators and the Police

Citizens and the opposition gathered around the “Serbia against violence” coalition protested in front of the building of the Republic Election Commission (REC) in Belgrade, and then in front of the City Assembly, demanding that the elections be annulled and a new one called due to, as they claim, huge irregularities. A session of the National Security Council was also held, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that several people had been arrested and that the arrests were continuing.

After the session of the National Security Council, Vučić said that yesterday night’s protests were “preparation”.

“This was a preparation, we have solid evidence for it and the state will react in accordance with the laws of this country. No one has the right to demolish our house, no one has the right to destroy our property,” he pointed out.

Vucic said that two policemen were seriously injured.

“Tonight, a violent takeover of state institutions was attempted. Arrests continue, where they are hiding, they will not be able to hide,” he added.

During the protest, the demonstrators wore banners and shouted “thieves, thieves”, and strong police forces guarded the Assembly.

After several hours spent in front of the city parliament, during which representatives of the opposition tried to enter the premises of the Belgrade City Assembly, the police dispersed the crowd. According to the media, several demonstrators were injured, as well as members of the police.

MPs from the “Serbia Against Violence” list tried to enter the Belgrade City Assembly building around 7 p.m., but the door was locked. After about 15 minutes, they tried the same thing again, and broke the glass on the front door with a flag handle.
