London Transport Buses in Sarajevo: How and when they really arrived

The beginnings of the City Transport Company in Sarajevo can be seen immediately after the Second World War, and in its long and rich history, double-decker buses have a special place.

After the phase of creation, and then the development of public city bus traffic in Sarajevo in the period from 1945 to 1960, an interesting phase is the arrival of London transport buses, about which we present a detailed and accurate chronology.

This valuable and very rare material, as well as historical facts, was covered and described in detail by the author Sefik Braco Emric in his book “Fragments of the history of automobiles in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) from the beginning of the 20th century”. He adapted this text from archival documents and texts.

Namely, the first British bus that arrived from London to Sarajevo and Yugoslavia in general in 1951, with the purpose of presenting the driving and transport characteristics of London buses, was a Guy Arab G36 with a Weymann body produced in 1943. It was sold to Autoprevoz Sarajevo in January 1952.

They were transported by ship to the Port of Hamburg in Germany, where Autoprevoz drivers picked them up and brought them to Sarajevo. They were buses of the British manufacturer Guy Arab Mk I / Mk2 (type G36, G37, G43, G100, G111, G122 G131, G135, G137, G286, G300) produced in the period from 1942 to 1945. In this way, Sarajevo, as the first city in Yugoslavia has included London’s double-deckersand London buses in general in its public city transport.

The London Transport Executive (LTE) was the organization responsible for public transport in the greater London area from 1948 to 1962 together with all transport authorities in London from 1933 to 2000, and the public name and operating brand of the organization was London Transport, Klix.ba reports.
