Ivan Lalić from Belgrade was 25 years old when he was severely wounded in Sarajevo in a convoy of the Red Cross, where he worked as a translator, in 1992. He was taken out of the vehicle by a young man and Ivan was looking for him for two decades. Last year, he finally found out what happened with the member of the Army of RBiH who saved his life.
On that 18th May, a bomb hit the convoy and Ivan was saved by a young man who said his name was Mufid.
“He took me out of the vehicle and to safety, under the rain of bullets and grenades. I was petrified because I was hit in the face and in my leg. I was all bloody. He put me in a small van and we headed towards the hospital,” Ivan recalls that day.
Despite severe injuries, Ivan woke up in a hospital the next morning. Mufid came to visit and brought cookies. Ivan was unable to speak, due to injuries.
After that visit, Ivan never saw Mufid again. Then Ivan spent months in Belgrade under treatment, and when he recovered he started looking for Mufid.
Years passed by and he did not find out anything. He even wrote a mini novel titled “Where are you, Mufid?”.
Twenty-three years later, in December 2015, Ivan found out what happened to Mufid.
“He was killed in December 1992, defending Sarajevo. That means he died six months after he saved me,” Ivan says through tears.
Ivan and Mufid were same age, and today Ivan is in touch with the family of his savior.
“I often say that Sarajevo is the city of my rebirth and I feel very well there,” Ivan claims.
