Manchester United Football Club’s financial problems will lead to the dismissal of 100 to 200 people, British media reported on Wednesday.
Sir James Arthur Ratcliffe, head of the INEOS group, which co-owns Manchester United and controls the club’s sporting arm, is considering laying off up to 200 employees in order to cover losses of more than 300 million pounds (about 360 million euros) over the past three years.
Last autumn, the English Premier League giants laid off 250 workers for the same reason.
A source told The Sun that while football is ultimately a business, countless individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes to contribute to a club’s success. They added that morale was already low following last year’s job cuts, and this latest round of layoffs would be another major setback.
In 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS Group Limited acquired a minority stake in Manchester United, taking charge of the club’s football operations. Due to years of costly and ineffective transfer deals, the club has faced significant financial losses, making sustainability a priority for future stability.
In July, approximately 250 employees were laid off from a workforce of 1,150 as part of cost-cutting measures. Over the past three years, the club has recorded losses of around £300 million ($373 million) and is now working to avoid PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) sanctions.
In November, Manchester United announced that they had to pay more than 24 million euros to fire former manager Erik Ten Hag and hire Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon as his replacement.
