Benjamina Karic, the mayor of Sarajevo, reacted to the latest scandalous statements of the president of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity Milorad Dodik, in which he denies that the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was under siege.
There are numerous reactions to the scandalous statements of Milorad Dodik, who said in an interview that “Sarajevo was not under siege by the RS army during the war, but that it was an ethnically divided city.” The mayor of Sarajevo also reacted to this.
Regarding Dodik’s statements about the siege of Sarajevo, which he repeats every time he wants to attract attention, I will say the same thing I said to Lidija Bradara: Sarajevo does not need to prove anything to anyone. Leave alone the City and the citizens of multicultural, European, Olympic Sarajevo, spare us your hatred, lies, and use of nationalism for personal gain,” Karic wrote on her social media.
The siege of Sarajevo, the capital of BiH, will be remembered in history as the longest siege of a capital city, lasting 1.425 days. During that time, around 350.000 citizens were exposed to daily fire from members of the former Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) and paramilitary formations, and later members of the Army of the RS (VRS), from almost all types of weapons, from positions located on the surrounding hills.
During the siege, 11.541 citizens of Sarajevo died, among them 1.601 children. During the siege, an average of 329 shells were fired at the city per day.
