Media Unions Urge Revocation of Award for 1992 Brcko Murder Image

The Independent Journalists Association of Serbia (NUNS) and the Association of BH Journalists have sent a letter to the World Press Photo Foundation requesting that it revoke the 1993 Spot News Award, awarded to photographer Bojan Stojanović, due to serious ethical dilemmas, and based on newly published findings regarding the circumstances of the creation of the photographs of the execution of civilians Husein Kršo and Hajrudin Muzurović in Brčko in 1992.

In a letter sent to the Foundation’s management on April 27, 2026, NUNS and BH Journalists also requested a formal apology to the family of Husein Krša, the publication of a correction, and a public statement on the steps that will be taken to ensure full compliance with the organization’s ethical guidelines, the Association of BH Journalists announced.

The reason for addressing the World Press Photo Foundation is journalist Barbara Matejčić’s award-winning research text “Killing for Photography”, published in May 2025 on the BIRN website and on the Novosti portal, in which Matejčić quotes war photographers and war crimes investigators, and through the analysis of proximity, the choice of lenses and a series of shots, as well as the fact that Bojan Stojanović himself changed his account of the event he immortalized over the years, sheds a completely different light on the origin award-winning photos.
