Italy supports the enlargement of the European Union, but to meet new challenges, the EU must change from a “bureaucratic giant” to a “political giant”, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told senators on Wednesday after a debate on her communications with parliament ahead of a European summit in Brussels, reports Ansa.
“Regarding expansion, I very much agree. It is a strategic choice for all of us. Expansion is good,”Meloni said.
“If we imagine an EU with 30-32 member states, it would bring new challenges. This will be discussed, as well as the reforms that will have to be made,” she added.
“We will also need to discuss the budget. We must not make the mistake of starting from the decision-making process, but from the things that the EU has to deal with. The EU must focus on issues that individual states cannot deal with. This is the position I take. The EU must transform itself from a bureaucratic giant into a political giant,”said the Prime Minister.
