MEPs: Europe can no longer depend on the US

The leaders of four political groups representing the majority of elected members of the European Parliament (EP) called on Tuesday for a “redoubled effort” to defend Ukraine and European security.

“Europe can no longer depend solely on the US to defend its values ​​and common interests,” the leaders of the right, left, environmentalists and the centre said in a rare joint statement, Beta reported.

Faced with a US-Russian diplomatic offensive to end the war in Ukraine, “the European Union and its member states have no choice but to act immediately,” the statement said.

The announcement of the opening of talks between Washington and Moscow on a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine has hit many European leaders hard, worried that they will not be included.

According to the leaders of the four groups of MEPs, it is necessary to “face the new reality and redouble efforts to defend Ukraine and European security.”

“Our groups are aware of the urgency and the need to react quickly to secure the necessary resources for our defense policy,” the statement said.
