The UN General Assembly calls for a Ceasefire and Lasting Peace in Ukraine

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The majority of member states, 107 of them, voted for the resolution in New York, while 12 were against and 51, including the United States of America (USA), abstained.

The resolution calls for an immediate, complete and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, as well as for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law.

The President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, told the German public service ARD that the resolution repeats what has already been decided several times regarding Ukraine.

“Namely, that peace can be just and lasting only if it is based on the rules of the UN Charter and if it respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” said Baerbock.

The American delegation submitted amendments to those two paragraphs, asking that they be deleted.

“You have to stop and think about it. This means consciously deleting from the resolution that peace should be lasting and just and that the UN Charter must be respected,” said Baerbock.

The US abstained from voting after its proposal to remove the two paragraphs was overwhelmingly rejected.

In the explanation of the amendment, the US stated that it welcomes the call for an immediate ceasefire.

However, they assessed that the resolution also contains wording that could divert attention from the ongoing negotiations, instead of supporting consideration of the full range of diplomatic paths that could pave the way to lasting peace.

“What is needed now to end the war is political will. We believe that we are closer to an agreement than at any time since this war began,” said the US mission to the UN, reports DPA.
