She showed an interest in science and education from an early age
Zlata Bartl, known as “Aunt Vegeta,” was born on February 20th, 1920, in Dolac near Travnik. This brilliant scientist left an indelible mark on the history of the Croatian and regional food industry and is best known for creating one of the most popular food seasonings – Vegeta.
Zlata grew up in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), where she completed elementary school and high school. From an early age, she showed an interest in science and education, so after high school, she enrolled at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Zagreb, where she studied chemistry, physics, mathematics, and natural sciences.
After finishing university, she began working as a teacher, but her true passion for research and science was just beginning to emerge.
Interestingly, Zlata remained in Zagreb by chance when heavy snowfall prevented her from continuing her journey. That winter of 1955 was so severe that due to blocked roads, Zlata could not return to Sarajevo for some time.
So, while waiting in Yugoslavia at the time, she started looking for a job until she could return home. While staying in Zagreb, she found a job advertisement for a chemical technician at Podravka, a Croatian factory from Koprivnica, a small town struggling with economic difficulties at the time.
She applied and was immediately hired. And that is where the incredible story of the product that would make Yugoslavia famous around the world began.
Aunt Vegeta
In 1955, Zlata Bartl was employed at Podravka, a well-known company from Koprivnica that was engaged in the production of food products. She worked in the research laboratory, where she was responsible for developing new products.
It was here that she made her greatest discovery – in 1959, Zlata Bartl and her team developed Vegeta, a universal food seasoning.
At that time, she lived in modest conditions in a factory in Koprivnica alongside her colleagues. They shared a single meal a day. The town was completely underdeveloped and impoverished. Vegeta quickly became a global phenomenon, a product used in households worldwide, from Europe to Asia and South America.
This seasoning, a combination of dehydrated vegetables and spices, became synonymous with rich flavor and simplicity in cooking. Vegeta soon became one of Podravka’s most successful products, and Zlata Bartl earned the nickname “Aunt Vegeta” for her contribution.
Although she did not become wealthy from her invention, Zlata was immensely proud of her work, and her innovation helped Podravka become one of the leading food manufacturers in the region.
Besides being the inventor of Vegeta, Zlata Bartl was also respected for her approach to work and her colleagues. She was known for her simplicity, modesty, and exceptional knowledge, as well as her love for science. Her workdays often started early in the morning and ended late at night, always in search of new ideas and solutions.
She remained connected to BiH
Throughout her life and career, Zlata Bartl remained connected to BiH, the country she came from, but she spent most of her life in Croatia, where she achieved her scientific and professional successes. She passed away on July 30th, 2008, in Koprivnica, leaving behind an indelible mark in the world of culinary arts.
Her name remains synonymous with innovation and quality, and Vegeta, her greatest invention, is still used in kitchens worldwide as one of the most recognizable products from this region.
