NATO calls Emergency Meeting over new Russian Missile launch

NATO and Ukraine will discuss Russia’s test-firing of an experimental medium-range hypersonic missile in Brussels next week, diplomats said on Friday.

The NATO-Ukraine council meeting on Tuesday will be held at ambassadorial level. It was called by Kiev after the strike on the city of Dnieper, officials told AFP.

The Kremlin said the strike on Ukraine using a newly developed hypersonic ballistic missile was designed to warn the West that Moscow would respond to moves by the US and UK to allow Kiev to strike Russia with its missiles, the Guardian reported.

According to AFP, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had fired a new Oreshnik, or “hazelnut,” missile at a Ukrainian military facility.

Peskov said Russia was not required to warn the US about the attack, but it had informed the US 30 minutes before the launch anyway. Putin remained open to dialogue, Peskov said.

Ukraine’s parliament has canceled its session on Friday, lawmakers said, citing the risk of a Russian missile attack on a district of Kiev where government buildings are located.
