NO to Primitivism: Samir Hodović from band Velahvale painted over offensive Graffiti

HodovicSamir Hodović, frontman from the band Velahavle, published a video on his YouTube channel in which he explained why he had to paint over offensive graffiti that read “Hang the Serbs”.

The graffiti was located on Vrace, and Hodović, together with his friends, decided to paint over it.

“It is the year 2015. Recently in this neighborhood, graffiti that reads “Hang the Serbs’ has appeared. My friends and I came to paint over it,” says Hodović at the beginning of the video.

Throughout the video, Hodović says that, in the Balkans, it is often necessary to explain “common sense” to “primitives”, so he offers to all a short, but informative, lecture as to why he had to remove the already mentioned graffiti.

“Primitives do not understand that the Serbs defended this city together with all others. This city, and its citizens, were not allowed to do this kind of thing even during the war, and certainly not now. It’s made such an ambience that the kind of thing like this graffiti seems banal, but it is not banal. It has created such an atmosphere that this reaction, like ours, looks pathetic, and it’s not, “says Hodović.

He added that the video was not recorded as a contribution to conceptual art, but with the desire that all of those watching the video start to react to primitivism and fascism.

“This is our humble contribution. We will make the day better for ourselves and the citizens of this city, and we recommend you do the same,” he says at the end.
